A CALL TO ACTION FOR BLACK WOMXN EQUAL PAY DAY

“You can’t know where you are going until you understand where you came from.”

These words from my grandmother, Granny Mildred, have been a guiding light for me. She passed 13 years ago but her words ring even more true today. This is why it is no surprise or coincidence that Black Womxn Equal Pay Day falls on the same week that our community pays solemn tribute to the first ship that brought human cargo from the Western part of the Motherland to the shores of the United States. That was 400 years ago — give or take 8 generations- that my ancestors were shackled to a ship and bartered for gold and power. For the next 300 years, these enslaved beings created Black American culture…
